Meta’s global network is built with cutting edge platforms and technologies, and our Optical Backbone Engineering team is looking for Production Engineers to join the core Optical Network family to help us provision and operate our optical network. This team is responsible for one of the world’s largest optical networks; data analysis and automation are keys to meeting our demands. In this role, you will have a unique opportunity to shape the future of the network, driving the latest technologies and platforms into production, at scale. You will be responsible for conceiving, developing, and deploying software, systems and tools that improve reliability and efficiency in our global network. Our team consists of many levels of experience and backgrounds and our engineers may have previously worked as any of: Site Reliability Engineer (SRE), Systems Engineer, Software Engineer, DevOps Engineer, Network Engineer. Relevant industry experience is important, but equally so are your demonstrated abilities and attitude. We sail into uncharted waters every day at Meta and we are always learning.
Optical Network Production Engineer, Operations Responsibilities
  • Operate Meta’s multi-vendor backbone and edge optical networks
  • Build tools to automate the deployment of Meta’s optical network
  • Develop & update documentation, work cross-functionally to develop and enhance Meta’s network production workflows
  • Diagnose and identify root causes to network and tooling issues, with data-driven decision making
  • Improve efficiency, scalability, security and stability of various systems
  • Together with your engineering team, share an on-call rotation and be an escalation contact for service incidents
  • Partner alongside the best engineers in the industry on the coolest stuff around - the code and systems you work on will be in production and used to operate a network used by billions of users all around the world
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or relevant technical field, or equivalent practical experience
  • Experience coding in at least one high-level language (e.g. Python, C++, Go, etc), using data structures and algorithms
  • Experience in developing or using network-related software, frameworks, and APIs
  • Working knowledge of TCP/IP, IPv4 or IPv6
Preferred Qualifications
  • Working knowledge of ROADM, coherent transponders, or other optical network components
  • Experience with developing software for building and/or operating large scale networking systems
  • Experience working on multi-team, multi-geography cross-functional projects, involving documenting and implementing network designs or tools
  • Working knowledge of BGP, OSPF, ISIS or similar routing protocols
  • Working knowledge of Ethernet and/or general L2 networking concepts
  • Experience developing, provisioning, or understanding network device configurations for at least one major vendor, or any Linux-based system
  • Experience with troubleshooting problems as relates to at least one networking system or platform (IP, optical, web servers, load balancers, storage systems etc)
