Research Scientist Intern, Neuromotor Control (PhD)
Location pin icon
At Reality Labs, our goal is to invent the user interface technologies that will drive the next generation of augmented-reality experiences. Our aim is to unleash human potential by removing barriers between intent and action. In particular, we are seeking candidates who have experience with one or more of the following: human motor learning and control, neuromotor signal processing (EMG, electrophysiology, EEG etc.), modeling of sensorimotor processing, computational neuroscience, perceptual modeling, haptic perception and processing and/or computational cognitive science. As a research intern, you will work on projects that span modeling, algorithm development and human-in-the-loop experimentation. You will have access to cutting-edge technology, resources, and testing facilities, and will collaborate with a diverse and interdisciplinary team of researchers and engineers. We invite applicants from a broad range of backgrounds spanning theoretical to experimental and integrated approaches. Our internships are twelve (12) to twenty-four (24) weeks long and we have various start dates throughout the year. Some projects may require a minimum of 16 consecutive weeks.
Research Scientist Intern, Neuromotor Control (PhD) Responsibilities
  • Plan and execute cutting-edge applied research to advance neuromotor control capabilities.
  • Use quantitative research methods to define, iterate upon and advance key areas of our research agenda.
  • Collaborate with dynamic teams of researchers and engineers.
  • Organize and lead research activities such as experimental design and implementation as well as data collection, modeling and analysis.
  • Communicate research activities and findings to collaborators across various disciplines.
  • Successful internships may also lead to publishable outcomes in top-tier journals or at leading international conferences.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Currently has, or is in the process of obtaining, a PhD in systems, cognitive or computational neuroscience, electrical engineering (e.g. signal processing, systems theory, control theory), applied statistics, applied math, computer science, robotics, or relevant technical field.
  • 3+ years of research-oriented implementation skills, including experience with scientific Python (data analyses, scientific communication tools), as evidenced by academic or professional research experience or contributions to open source projects.
  • 1+ years of experience in experimental design of user studies and statistical analysis to interpret results.
  • Proven research skills involving defining problems, exploring solutions, and analyzing and presenting results.
  • Must obtain work authorization in the country of employment at the time of hire and maintain ongoing work authorization during employment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working with neural data or other multi-channel timeseries sensor data.
  • Experience with multimodal recording systems (e.g. simultaneous measurement of physiology and behavior).
  • Familiarity with signal processing including real-time signal processing.
  • Experience with haptic perception and motor control.
  • Proven track record of achieving significant results as demonstrated by grants, fellowships, patents, as well as first-authored publications at leading journals (Science, Nature, Cell Press Family of Journals, Journal of Neuroscience), workshops or conferences such as neural control of movement, COSYNE, ICML, NeurIPS or similar.
  • Experience working and communicating cross functionally in a team environment.
  • Intent to return to degree program after the completion of the internship/co-op.
  • Availability for minimum 16 consecutive week internship.
