The Optical Systems Engineering Team is looking for a creative optical systems engineer to support development and release of Prescription (Rx) solutions for our MR products. You will work cross-functionally with electrical, mechanical, display, optics, sensor, and other teams to ensure the performance and realization of optical products. You can handle a high degree of ambiguity in product definition, play a critical role in the product engineering process, including product definition, scoping, task management & prioritization, rollout and launch. You are good at making the right engineering tradeoffs in the context of a wider product or project goal. You are sought as a technical mentor, who makes the team more effective by bringing in best practices, identifying & removing bottlenecks, mentoring team members, as well as avoiding common pitfalls. Other engineers and managers look to you for your experience and expertise in the ophthalmic industry and product development process.
Optical System Engineer - Rx Solutions Responsibilities
  • Change the landscape of capabilities of MR.
  • Identify Rx solutions for new system concepts and architectures, develop innovative processes that improve optical performance and system cost.
  • Work closely with the product manager and architect to identify proper prescription solution strategy across multiple generations of MR product.
  • Work closely across the optics, display, mechanical, SW, and other cross-functional engineering teams to define, develop, realize, and simulate a variety of optical systems with different Rx solution options.
  • Work closely with the quality, test engineering, 3rd party vendor, and technical operations teams to transition Rx solutions into mass production.
  • Distill product-level requirements and user insight to Rx solution design and requirements.
  • Create and maintain engineering specifications.
  • Specify key performance indicators, test methods, and test requirements for prescription components and sub-systems.
  • Work closely with domestic and international vendors.
  • Up to 20% domestic and international travel.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Optical Engineering, Physics, Optometry, Vision Science or a related technical discipline.
  • 5+ years of experience on optical systems engineering or other relevant fields.
  • Demonstrated history of optical system engineering and cross-functional product development.
  • Experience in the ophthalmic industry, including human-vision, optical design, coating, and manufacturing process, or similar experience.
  • Experience communicating and collaborating in a cross-functional team environment.
  • Experience in Design of Experiment and statistical analysis using JMP, Matlab, or similar programs.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Advanced degree in Optical Engineering, Physics, Vision Science or a related technical discipline.
  • Doctor of Optometry (OD) degree from an accredited optometry school.
  • Experience in at least one of the following optical software design packages: Zemax, Code V, LightTools, FRED, or ASAP.
  • Experience in designing and tolerancing both sequential and non-sequential optical systems.
  • Experience in one of the following: Image quality evaluation, Stray light molding and analysis, Camera module or lens testing and characterization, Imaging optics design and manufacturing, Illumination optics design and manufacturing, Display/backlight design and development, Polarization, Visual Optics, or Optical testing and metrology.
  • Experience working with cross-functional teams to manage the risk portfolio at different stages of product development.
  • Experience working in a fast-paced startup environment.

$170,000/year to $240,000/year + bonus + equity + benefits

Individual compensation is determined by skills, qualifications, experience, and location. Compensation details listed in this posting reflect the base hourly rate, monthly rate, or annual salary only, and do not include bonus, equity or sales incentives, if applicable.
