Meta Reality Labs - Research (RLR) is dedicated to the research and development required to bring virtual and augmented reality to billions of people around the world. At the Codec Avatar lab, we aspire to a vision of social VR and AR, where people are able to interact with each other across distances in a way that is indistinguishable from in-person interactions. RLR is looking for a talented Electrical Engineer to accelerate the progression to authentic social presence in virtual reality. In our current pipeline, a multitude of sensing components, including image sensors, microphones, and inertial measurement units are installed on the headset prototypes in order to collect a rich suite of information that reflects the user's physical state, with an emphasis on modality synchronicity and latency minimization; this information is then processed by our state-of-the-art algorithms to allow for a computational representation of the user. The ideal candidate for this position will be experienced in prototyping vision and audio capture systems, circuit simulation and modeling, schematics capture, and PCB layout design involving high-speed digital systems, flexes and programmable logic, as well as the use of multi-GHz digital test equipment. A working knowledge of industry-standard differential signaling and communication protocols would also be crucial. You will work in a dynamic cross-functional team including electrical, mechanical, and software engineers, as well as design and research experts. Strong communication and interpersonal skills are required.
Electrical Engineer Responsibilities
  • Architecture lead and design of electrical engineering solutions for novel VR/AR devices and systems which combine mechanics, vision, audio, optics, and software
  • Establish and conduct collaborations with internal and external technology partners and vendors
  • Co-lead the engineering of large and complex multidisciplinary hardware projects
  • Lead integrations of new technologies into research prototypes
  • Discover new trends and solutions in high speed interconnects, such as those based on MIPI, USB-C, PCIe, CoaXPress, GMSL, and Ethernet
  • Create and document PCB requirements
  • Apply novel engineering solutions to challenging power/size/thermal requirements
  • Conduct electronic circuit design schematics, guide PCB layout, simulating, assembly, testing, debugging, and integration of multi-component electrical systems, as well as implementing RTL for programmable logic
  • Collaborate in a team environment across engineering and research disciplines
  • Transform vendor reference designs into custom solutions
  • Conduct architecture and design reviews to ensure the quality of hardware and embedded systems
  • Work independently and manage priorities
  • Recruit top talent and onboard engineers
Minimum Qualifications
  • BS or higher education in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or equivalent
  • 8+ years of industry experience in system-level hardware design and electrical engineering roles
  • Demonstrated cross-functional collaboration working with engineers, SW architecture, and other hardware/software functions delivering complex systems
  • Experience mentoring junior to senior engineers and working highly independently while managing priorities
  • Experience with low and high speed communication interfaces, such as MIPI, USB, PCIe, Ethernet, I2C, SPI, I2S, and CAN
  • Experience with bringing up and debugging high-speed digital systems
  • Experience working with and integrating appropriate FPGA solutions into systems that also include microcontrollers and/or application microprocessors
  • Experience with circuit simulations and modeling (e.g. LT SPICE)
  • Experience with schematic and board design using Cadence OrCAD, Altium, or equivalent, targeting HDI design
  • Experience with use of oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, function generators, and other digital test equipment. Practical experience of measuring/analyzing multi-GHz signals
  • Experience with several of these technologies: camera, audio, robotics, lighting, digital signal processing, real-time image processing, display engineering, FPGA
Preferred Qualifications
  • MS degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or equivalent
  • 15+ years of industry experience in hardware design and electrical engineering roles
  • 10+ years of experience in research or advanced development
  • Experience with high speed signaling over DP, MIPI, HDMI, PCIe, CoaXPress, and USB SS
