The Facebook community has more than 2 billion people, and Market Specialists play a key role within the global Community Operations team by keeping the platform safe, vibrant and diverse to provide a great experience for Facebook's community. Through their work, Market Specialists support Facebook’s mission to give people the power to build community and bring the world closer together.
In the first installment of the Community Operations Asia Pacific blog series, we asked Pat P., a Market Specialist for Thailand, to share more about what she does in her role.
What do you do as a Market Specialist at Facebook?
I relocated from Thailand to Facebook's Dublin office, and am a Market Specialist for Thailand where I serve as a voice for the Thai community and come up with solutions that have real-world impact. I collaborate with multiple teams within Facebook, including market, product, policy, and engineering teams, to review content reported for potential abuse, resolve account issues, improve the overall support experience for people in Thailand, as well as solve thematic global issues.
How do you make an impact in your role?
I'm proud to be part of a team that builds engagement and trust in Facebook. I bring my cultural knowledge about Thailand, as well as innovation, and analytical skills to provide creative solutions for the Thai community. A big part of my job includes finding ways to scale our operations by optimizing and automating processes, solving challenging problems, and most importantly, preventing potential problems from happening.
What is something that most people don’t know about the work you do and your team?
Our decision-making process is complex, we work with large data sets that challenge assumptions. Through this data, we discover and implement solutions to help support positive experiences for people on Facebook.
It is also about balancing the needs between global and local communities. As a global team, we strive to support the global community, while preserving the integrity, authenticity, and unique cultural differences of local communities. A large part of our work is to build a global policy infrastructure to support different markets, languages and cultures around the world.
Is there a word or phase that best describes the culture of your team?
Richness of culture! I work on an incredibly diverse team where my coworkers come from different backgrounds, ethnicity, beliefs, cultures and more. Despite our differences, everyone believes in providing the best experience for our communities and we work towards a shared mission. Diversity on my team is an asset; we bring in different perspectives to make positive changes for Facebook and the communities that we serve.
You moved from Thailand to Dublin for this role. How has Facebook supported your move to another country?
Facebook has teams dedicated to making your move as easy as possible. There was a lot of paper work with my move, from permits and visas to travel documents, and the team helped with it all. The relocation team helped me find housing, and get settled quickly. I had a smooth transition because of the support, and was able to focus on my new role and team, and enjoy Dublin!
Three favorite things about Dublin:
The City: Dublin is a very livable and vibrant city. It's an urban neighborhood, and I enjoy the comfortable lifestyle and amenities the city offers. The Facebook office is located at the stunning Grand Canal Docks area which is surrounded by trendy cafes, and restaurants making it easy to catch up with friends and colleagues after work.
The People: In my experience, Dublin is home to some of the friendliest people in the world. They're laid back, welcoming and know how to enjoy life. It's an international city, I've met so many people from different parts of the world here.
Location and Surrounding Areas: Dublin has many natural scenic locations that are easily a 30-minute drive away, which is wonderful because I enjoy hikes and long walks. The city's central location also provides convenient access to all the major capitals of Europe. I spend many of my weekends flying to other European cities and exploring new locales because it is so easy to travel to other parts of Europe from Dublin.
What’s the one piece of advice you’ll give to someone looking to join Facebook as a Market Specialist?
To be a Market Specialist, you need to have a strong desire to solve people issues, and be a passionate advocate for the Facebook community. This means taking initiative and collaborating with cross-functional teams to deliver a great experience for people using Facebook. You should also be solutions and data orientated, and be comfortable with working on huge sets of data.
This role is challenging, but you will gain new skills and experiences, and make a meaningful impact to improve Facebook and our communities around the world.
