Engineering leaders at Facebook support their team members and help them succeed as we build groundbreaking technology at scale, to bring people and communities closer together.
Meet Tanton, Engineering Manager
“At Facebook I have the freedom to work on projects that matter,” Tanton says about his role as an engineering leader in our Seattle office. The engineers Tanton supports are on a team called Community Integrity, a team that has grown significantly since Tanton first started at Facebook over three years ago.
During coding boot camp, an 8-week intensive course for new engineers, Tanton saw an opportunity to improve detection and removal of things like spam and nudity in Facebook Groups.
To tackle the issue, Tanton set up a team called the CareML (Care Machine Learning) team within the Community Integrity team. By applying machine learning techniques to identify inappropriate content, his team could scale efforts to identify and tag posts that violate Facebook’s policies. “Whereas certain types of content require human review, there are some things like spam and nudity that our machines are sophisticated enough to identify with precision and remove automatically” Tanton explains.
It’s incredibly important to maintain a safe community on Facebook, and the Community Integrity team continues to search for new ways to contribute to this company-wide effort. “Proactivity and vigilance are key,” Tanton says. “We spend a lot of time reviewing technical designs, poring over metrics, looking at what’s working and what’s not, thinking about how we should be pushing the envelope in our space, and talking to other thought leaders.”
Knowing Facebook is a clean platform means a lot to Tanton, whose own mother uses it to keep in touch with her grandchildren. The personal impact, in addition to learning new machine learning techniques on a daily basis, are what he enjoys most. He explains it simply: “We just want to take care of our community.”
Jeff's day-to-day activities vary quite a bit. But it's very apparent that he embraces Facebook's mission and values through his work and his interactions with his team. Here's a look at a typical day in his life through his own words and lens.
Engineering Manager Lin works on data infrastructure that ensures system reliability, efficiency, and user productivity. Read further to get to know Lin's role, and find out her advice to engineering managers interviewing at Facebook.
Meet Barak, engineering director working in software engineering for over 25 years, who is leading teams based out of our headquarters in Menlo Park, our Seattle engineering center and recently out of the Tel Aviv office. These teams are integrating skills from different disciplines in AI and ML.
Engineering manager Surupa has spent the last 4 years of her career at Facebook. She was inspired by her father, who bought his first Apple computer in the 80s. Find out more about what keeps her busy at Facebook, and why she says she is continually challenged in her role.
We caught up with Dolapo, an engineering manager who works on AR out of our London office. Learn more about Dolapo including his inspiration to study engineering, his current work, and what keeps him busy during a typical day at Facebook.
His first computer was a Franklin 1200. He now supports two teams of engineers that help Facebook scale at a rapid pace and tackle some of the most challenging problems in warehouse data processing. Find out more about Vaughn's work and impact at Facebook.
Meet Gemma, an Engineering Manager in our London office. We interviewed her to learn about her experience working at Facebook, what she enjoys most about work and her favourite things about Facebook London.
We asked Jim, an engineering manager in London, to share a typical day with us. As part of Oculus London, he supports the social experiences team building Oculus Rooms and the recently announced Oculus Venues.
Meet Hani, who didn't own a computer until she was almost twenty years old. After attending the Technion, she joined Facebook as a software engineer and has since become an engineering manager at our Israel site.
Brian wound up having the opportunity to move to London to help us grow the office there! He really enjoyed the chance to understand more about leadership within global companies.
