Facebook Family Hackathon: Learning, Creating, and Building at All Ages

Facebook is a place for families. We recently held our 4th annual Facebook Family Hackathon at our Menlo Park headquarters, welcoming approximately 950 guests from the community including kids, grandkids, and nieces and nephews. The day was filled with exciting opportunities to work on fun projects, solve problems, and come up with new ideas.
““Hosting hackathons and sharing the experience with the whole family is one way we encourage that spirit of creativity, learning and building, regardless of age.” - Aparna R, Facebook engineering director”
After Aparna kicked off the event with a warm welcome, the crowd started hacking away!

Family Hackathon Highlights

The day was filled with activities including building with Goldieblox, Osmo and Magna Tiles. Our coding lab with Tynker challenged hackers to solve JavaScript puzzles and design games using Minecraft modding.
We also gave guests an inside look at Area 404, Facebook’s hardware development laboratory where teams have access to the space to innovate and build - for example, our 6 degrees of freedom cameras were prototyped in the space. And guests fully immersed themselves in VR experiences through Oculus Rift demos.
Guests left the event with fond memories, new skills, and goody bags full of toys from our partners.
