The Soft Goods Engineering team develop and integrate technical soft goods solutions across all of Meta's consumer VR, AR, Wearables and Accessories product lines. We work closely with a wide array of creative, technical and operations partners as we push the boundaries of what is possible. Extensive experience in Soft Goods engineering, design and development is strongly preferred but not required for this position. As a Soft Goods Product Design Engineer at Meta Reality Labs, you will take a critical role in designing novel Soft Goods solutions to improve comfort and ergonomics for our consumer electronics devices. You’ll own parts and assemblies such as facial interfaces, strap systems, wrist wearables with integrated electronics and charging carry cases. We also provide support for our accessories lines such as carry cases and VR headset customization. As a member of our team, you will take the lead in exploring and refining your designs through iterative prototyping, while working with talented engineers, designers and manufacturers. You will refine selected designs and coordinate with manufacturing experts during the production process. Our ideal candidate has a strong mechanical background, deep experience in designing and manufacturing consumer electronics products (Soft Goods experience preferred), expert 3D and 2D CAD capability, and excellent prototyping skills.
Product Design Engineer - Soft Goods Responsibilities
  • Design and develop new Soft Goods parts and assemblies for high-volume consumer electronic devices.
  • Own Soft Goods engineering activities throughout the product life cycle, from definition and creation, through design, production, and next-gen improvements.
  • Collaborate closely with Industrial Designer and engineering disciplines to identify challenges and offer creative solutions.
  • Collaborate with small teams of engineers and vendors to drive down selections of options and deliver products within tight time and cost constraints.
  • Implement sound engineering processes and systematic approaches, while solving diverse design and manufacturing challenges.
  • Serve as a resident expert in Soft Goods design engineering and DFM.
  • Contribute to the creation of technical specifications and product definition.
  • Test and evaluate soft goods design components for manufacturability and performance.
  • Coordinate with Soft Goods manufacturing experts to optimize part design and production processes, run DOEs and ensure we meet process capability targets.
Minimum Qualifications
  • BS or higher in Mechanical Engineering or related field, or equivalent experience
  • 4+ years of experience in product design engineering of consumer products from concept to production
  • Foundational knowledge in engineering fundamentals
  • Experience with human factors and wearable technologies
  • Knowledge in mechanical design fundamentals for typical consumer electronics design (injection molding, stamping, casting, MIM, machining, etc.)
  • Experience working with China-based vendors remotely and in-person
  • Experience building and assembling prototypes in the shop
Preferred Qualifications
  • Soft Goods manufacturing expertise and proven record of shipping consumer products with integrated Soft Goods elements.
  • 6+ years of experience in 3D modeling in SolidWorks, Pro/E or NX (NX preferred).
  • Experience mentoring others, leading by example, and elevating the engineering excellence of your team
  • Knowledge of soft goods manufacturing processes (textiles, foam, leather, adhesives, silicone).
  • Experience shipping products in a new product category.
  • Experience with building soft goods prototypes in the shop.
  • Mandarin and/or Cantonese language skills.

$139,000/year to $200,000/year + bonus + equity + benefits

Individual compensation is determined by skills, qualifications, experience, and location. Compensation details listed in this posting reflect the base hourly rate, monthly rate, or annual salary only, and do not include bonus, equity or sales incentives, if applicable.
