Reality Labs Research is seeking an intern with expertise in haptic hardware systems, haptic perception, and tools to explore use cases in learning, coadaptation, and biofeedback applicable to augmented and virtual worlds. The intern will work on developing innovative haptic solutions that can enhance user experiences in augmented and virtual environments. In particular, we are seeking candidates who have experience in: - Building and demonstrating haptic HW/SW systems. - Experience in psychophysical study design and/or machine learning methods to create effective haptic feedback technologies. - Haptic authoring tools or haptic authoring aids to develop novel interactions and interfaces for augmented reality glasses and wearable devices. Work with researchers to help enable their work across the following research disciplines: - Haptic Research - Haptics Human Computer Interaction Our internships are twelve (12) to twenty-four (24) weeks long and we have various start dates throughout the year. Some projects may require a minimum of 16 consecutive weeks.
Research Scientist Intern, Haptic Research (PhD) Responsibilities
  • Create a concrete research plan for your own topic during the internship, synthesizing input from the team, potential impact, and your own perspective and expertise.
  • Formulate research questions, set up HW/SW systems, and design experiments. Analyze and model data, and create a demonstration of the system.

  • Collaborate with other researchers, designers, and engineers to develop, prototype, test, and iterate solutions.
  • Communicate research activities and findings to collaborators across various disciplines.
  • Plan and execute cutting-edge research to advance haptics for human-computer interaction.
  • Organize and lead research activities such as designing and building prototypes, experimental design, data collection, and analysis.
  • Produce publishable research that appears in top-tier journals or at leading international conferences.
  • Write and publish high-quality scientific articles.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Currently has, or is in the process of obtaining, a PhD degree in Haptics, Robotics, Mechantronics, or relevant technical field.
  • Experience on haptic systems or mechatronics.
  • Experience in haptic hardware prototyping.
  • Proficiency in at least one of: Python, C/C++, Matlab, or equivalent.
  • Must obtain work authorization in the country of employment at the time of hire and maintain ongoing work authorization during employment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Expertise with psychophysical research methods and computational modeling.
  • Familiarity with the HCI field.
  • Familiarity with AR/VR technologies and literature.
  • Proficiency in VR and game engines like Unity or Unreal Engine.
  • Proven track record of achieving significant results as demonstrated by grants, fellowships, patents, as well as first-authored publications at leading workshops or conferences such as RoboSoft, ICRA, IROS, CHI, ISMAR, UIST, HFES, IEEE Transactions on Haptics, IEEE VR, Siggraph, or similar.
  • Experience working and communicating cross functionally in a team environment.
  • Intent to return to degree-program after the completion of the internship/co-op.
  • Availability for minimum 16 consecutive week internship.

$7,800/month to $11,293/month + benefits

Individual compensation is determined by skills, qualifications, experience, and location. Compensation details listed in this posting reflect the base hourly rate, monthly rate, or annual salary only, and do not include bonus, equity or sales incentives, if applicable.
