As an Opto-mechanical NPI Engineer at Meta, you will take a critical role in development and manufacturing of next generation AR systems, and will have the opportunity to be part of a team composed of some of the best engineers, scientists and leaders defining the field of AR/VR. You will be responsible for assessing the manufacturability of opto-mechanical design and assembly processes for first-generation optical modules for future products, partnering with suppliers and internal partners to champion manufacturability, scalability, reliability and cost initiatives during design and development, and successfully ramping and sustaining high-volume manufacturing of optical modules. Successful candidates work well in teams, can brainstorm big ideas, adapt to new technology areas, will advocate for manufacturability during concept and prototyping stages, and can enable designs, systems and processes for high-volume consumer product solutions.
Opto-Mechanical NPI Engineer Responsibilities
  • Determine specifications to assess overall performance of optical architectures, through rigorous tolerance analysis, assessing manufacturing capabilities and understanding downstream as well as customer-facing requirements.
  • Drive design/process/spec validation, FMEA, failure analysis, tolerance analysis, gauge R&R and GD&T activities, towards demonstrating design robustness and process manufacturability and scalability of optical modules and systems.
  • Drive equipment DFM reviews for assembly processes such as high precision active/passive alignment, and apply lean manufacturing principles to the end-to-end design of assembly and automation of high-volume manufacturing lines.
  • Drive in-field failure analysis, mitigations and corrective actions for assembly process equipment performance, UPH, OEE and yield gaps.
  • Drive suppliers to provide data analysis and reports of process equipment performance capability.
  • Ensure manufacturability, scalability and reliability are considered in end-to-end discussions on design and process down-selection, prototyping, equipment & tooling needs for high-precision assembly.
  • Share assessment of manufacturability of optical/mechanical designs and assembly processes with internal team members and NPI engineering leadership at each stage of development.
  • Engage in optical module DFM and assembly process validation
  • support module builds and system integration activities at external suppliers
  • and evaluate/assess the manufacturability of prototype optical systems.
  • Collaborate to standardize data collection and reporting practices
  • identify component and process CTQs
  • drive IQC/IPQC/OQC capabilities and methodologies in place for CTQ data collection, analysis, monitoring and reporting and OCAP for high-volume manufacturing.
  • Document, standardize, and collaboratively implement best practices, SOPs, and operational models.
  • Influence cross-functional teams of engineers and managers to drive the development and delivery of first-generation optical systems to life.
  • Develop relationships with component and equipment supplier companies, keep informed on new materials and fabrication methods, and on latest developments/capabilities in advanced high-precision assembly and manufacturing processes.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in Mechanical, Opto-mechanical Engineering or related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in mechanical or opto-mechanical engineering or an equivalent role developing optical modules or systems, from concept/prototyping to high-volume manufacturing, in highly multidisciplinary environments.
  • 5+ years of experience working with external suppliers to deliver custom optical components, modules, or systems.
  • Proficiency with mechanical CAD.
  • Practical experience with tolerance analysis of opto-mechanical assemblies, Monte Carlo simulation, and specification of optical/mechanical tolerances for manufacturability.
  • Practical experience with assembly and equipment DFM review and assessment against component/module specs and tolerances.
  • Experience using scripting languages and data analysis tools such as Matlab, Python or JMP.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s or PhD degree in Mechanical/Opto-mechanical/Optical Engineering or related field.
  • 8+ years experience in mechanical or opto-mechanical engineering or an equivalent role.
  • Experience with process development and failure analysis for optical components and modules such as cameras, sensors, or illumination/projector systems.
  • Experience integrating complex electro-opto-mechanical systems.
  • Experience working with optical design software such as Zemax, CodeV or Light-tools.
  • Experience with modeling complex assemblies in CAD, Solidworks or NX.
  • Experience with scripting and data analysis, Python, or Matlab.
  • Experience with drawing creation, tolerance analysis, and GD&T.
  • Experience with quick-turn fabrication processes (3D printing, machining, molding).
  • Experience creating and working within industrial design models.
  • Experience with consumer-product mechanical design.
  • Experience with design for manufacturability optimization.
  • Experience with multiple full life-cycle product launches.
  • Basic FEA skills for modeling structural and thermal systems, COMSOL or Ansys.
