At Meta Reality Labs (RL), our goal is to explore, innovate, and design novel interfaces and hardware subsystems for the next generation of virtual, augmented, and mixed reality experiences. We are seeking an Optical Systems Engineer, to accelerate our innovation and product development. Your focus will be on the most challenging optical problems, utilizing your expertise, experience, and industry connections to find solutions that will drive our AR/VR roadmap. As an Optical Systems Engineer, you will actively engage with cross-functional engineering teams, including optics, display, metrology, and operations, to develop and mature a diverse range of polarization optical components within VR optical systems through the NPI process. Your primary objective is to ensure the fulfillment of product requirements through comprehensive collaboration and expertise.
Optical Systems Engineer Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with optics, display, mechanical, metrology, and other cross-functional engineering teams to analyze, develop, and implement a variety of polarization optical components and optical systems.
  • Derive key performance indicator requirements at both the component and optical system levels.
  • Establish simulation models, design, and conduct Design of Experiments (DOEs) to validate design assumptions and simulation results.
  • Perform tolerance analysis and manage performance budgets for polarization-sensitive optical components and subsystems, striking a balance between manufacturability and cost implications against system-level KPIs.
  • Develop simulation software and tools, providing documentation and training to support other team members.
  • Execute DOEs and failure analyses to address polarization-related KPI failures caused by manufacturing processes.
  • Support the development of tests and metrology as a subject matter expert in the field of polarization.
  • Deliver executive-level summaries and recommendations at the organizational and architectural levels to inform subsystem-level design decisions.
  • 15% domestic and or international travel.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, relevant technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Experienced in handling ambiguity and collaborating with large cross-functional teams and multilayer supply chain to successfully deliver polarization optical components into production for VR applications.
  • Experience in Zemax, LightTools, Matlab, Mathematica or Polaris M.
  • Experience in tolerancing sequential or non-sequential optical systems.
  • Experience in tolerancing polarization sensitive optical components/systems.
  • Experience using both logical and creative thinking to solve problems.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Advanced degree in Optical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a related technical discipline.
  • 4+ years of industry and academic/research experience in Polarization simulation, Polarization ray tracing, Polarization measurement, and Visual Optics.
  • Experience in one or more of the following: Stray light modeling and analysis, Illumination optics design and manufacturing, Display/backlight design and development.
  • Experience in statistical process control in the manufacturing environment using JMP, Matlab, or similar programs.
